It’s good news that
Reading University will continue to run a limited number of short
courses in 2009/10 and 2010/11, and that there will be a limited
opportunity for people who are not registered certificate students
to enrol in them. It’s also good news that Oxford University will
offer some short courses in Reading from 2010/11. However, we think
it likely that these will not meet the needs of everyone looking for
academic short courses in the Reading area:
1.
The number of places on
Reading University short courses will be limited.
2.
The current price of a
10-week Oxford short course is £125 with no concessions for retired
people, and we think this more likely to increase than reduce. Other
providers may be able to provide courses for less.
3.
Both Reading and Oxford
courses will be offered on the Whiteknights campus, which some may
find difficult to get to.
4.
Other large providers
(like New Directions and U3A) are very welcome, but offer different
kinds of course.
So we have invited the WEA (Workers Educational Association,
www.wea.org.uk ) to come back to
Reading, and we welcome other organisations or groups offering
academic short courses in this area.
While this situation is
developing, we will try to keep people informed. If you would like
to be kept informed and you don’t yet receive emails from us, please
fill in the form below. This will result in your name being added to
Reading-ACE’s list of Reading-area students and potential students.
This list will be used
to send out occasional emails giving news of courses or where to
find details of courses. These courses may be run by the WEA or
other providers including the universities. Your contact details may
be shared with other providers of academic short courses in the
Reading area, but with no-one else. You can at any time ask that
your name be withdrawn from the list by replying to one of our
emails saying so.
